What's happening in retail?

Here are our picks for top news impacting retailers today:

  • Block has laid off approximately 4,000 workers, or about 40% of its workforce. Co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey hinted that AI was replacing human labor, stating: “A significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better. And intelligence tool capabilities are compounding faster every week” (via CNN Business).

  • eBay announced it would be cutting ~800 positions across its operations, or about 6% of its workforce, shortly after announcing its acquisition of second-hand fashion app Depop (via FOX Business).

  • TJX delivered very strong fourth-quarter results, including an adjusted EPS of $1.43 versus analyst estimates of $1.39 and net sales of $17.7 billion, representing an increase of 9% YoY. “Full year comparable sales grew a very strong 5% and overall profitability and earnings per share both increased significantly” Ernie Herrman, CEO and president, said (via press release).

  • Netflix has dropped out of the WBD bidding war, leaving the path clear for Paramount Skydance to move in. The deal relies on shareholder approval of the plan, as well as regulatory approval, but would signal a large win for Paramount if all goes through (via CNN Business).

  • Burger King is slated to roll out an AI assistant, “Patty,” which will track operations and inventory while also monitoring employee conversations. Key words and phrases such as “welcome to Burger King,” “please,” and “thank you” will be tracked to generate a friendliness score (via Gizmodo).
