What's happening in retail?

Here are our picks for top news impacting retailers today:

  • The ongoing Iran conflict adds another layer — atop tariffs — of increased costs, compounded by various factors including the increased price of raw materials, oil-based packaging, last-mile delivery, and consumer travel expenses. “Every category touched by petrochemical inputs, agricultural supply chains, or global logistics faces its own version of this cost stack, and most touch more than one,” Forbes’ Brian Delp wrote (via Forbes).

  • Trader Joe’s saw its private label fried rice recalled as part of an earlier expansion of previous food recalls. Produced by Ajinomoto, nearly 10 million pounds of Trader Joe’s Vegetable Fried Rice have now been recalled after small shards of glass were found in some product (via FOX Business).

  • Gap has partnered with Google to offer customers the opportunity to perform instant checkout via Gemini. “We’ll continue to evolve the experience and bring the things forward that the customers want, so that is definitely the roadmap and the future,” Gap’s CTO, Sven Gerjets, said (vai CNBC).

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that a $20 billion chip plant was to be built in Austin, Texas, to support xAI, Tesla, and SpaceX goals. The “Terafab” plant will be responsible for processing a terawatt of computing power on an annual basis (via KVUE).

  • Estee Lauder and Puig are engaged in merger talks, with the potential deal meaning that brands such as Tom Ford, Carolina Herrara, and Clinique would live beneath the same roof. Shares of Puig soared in early morning trading as a result on Mar. 24 (via CNBC).
